It was highly enjoyable to see their interesting personalities interact, with Haru the sweet and gentle one, and Tokaku the one who is quiet but intense. Much to my bafflement, there are still people who will say Utena and Anthy are really just friends.

Some of these couples are the main characters in their own gay anime shows, whereas some are featured in series that aren't inherently LGBTQ anime. These couples are a big step in the right direction, each slowly but surely helping to normalize LGBTQ+ romance in anime and breaking away from the problematic tropes of the past.

One of the most interesting things about them is that Nanami is clearly sexually attracted to Yuu, who becomes romantically bonded to Nanami but does not feel comfortable with too much physical contact. However, Tokaku instead feels attracted to Haru, and becomes her protector.

Saki and Maria make up one of my very favorite anime couples. All the same, it was the first anime of its genre that I ever watched, so I have a special appreciation for it. Their dynamic changes through the 3 seasons as they learn to be more sensitive to each other. There were some anime couples out there that represented us is different ways and had the romances that we really wanted.
